who is skwisgaar?

skwisgaar is the lead guitarist in the death metal band dethklok! within the context of the show, he is the best and fastest guitarist in the entire world. he is also my favorite character in the show :P i'm such a big fan of this weird guy, so this page exists for me to just... talk about that lol

why do you like him so much?

oh god that is the question.

so one of my all-time favorite character tropes is “guy who acts super cool / proud / nonchalant / above everything but is secretly just a massive insecure nerd.” this applies to just about every dethklok member, but especially to skwisgaar.

skwisgaar is presented as this really cool and detached guy. of all of the band members, he is the most isolated. the other members call him a basketcase, he’s not as involved in the other members’ lives (with the exception of toki maybe), and so on. he’s definitely very proud, and for good reason. he is just that good at the guitar. it also helps that he is canonically the most attractive member of the band. all of this fits together to make him seem like the typical egotistical rockstar.

but skwisgaar is deeply, deeply insecure underneath all that. his driving motivation throughout the show is his fear of losing his spot as the world’s best guitarist. there are several episodes (dethlessons, bookklok) that focus on skwisgaar’s fear of toki surpassing him in the band. even when toki isn’t a part of the equation, he worries about his own abilities so often (skwisklok). he’s insecure about his childhood, too – to the point where he nearly gives up everything to live a normal life in sweden in fatherklok.

skwisgaar is a massive nerd, too. he knows more about the guitar than, like, anything else. it’s funny how many times he just drops random guitar knowledge in the show. i know nothing about playing music so it goes right over my head but i still find it funny…

skwisgaar wasn’t actually my favorite metalocalypse character the first time i watched the show, but he grew on me so quickly. he’s so funny but there is so much depth to him below the surface, too. i could go on and on but i need to cut myself off somewhere so it might as well be here. i just love this guy

- skwisgaar and pickles write the majority of dethklok’s music (outside of lyrics). skwisgaar the guitar and bass parts for the songs. he also rerecords the bass lines because murderface is so bad at them…

- skwisgaar is canonically a god of fertility (which parallels toki being a god of death!!)

- his main guitar, the thunderhorse explorer, was officially released for a limited time by gibson! the snow horse, which he plays in the duel, was also made in real life, but only brendon small has one iirc
